In 1958, the Philadelphia Mint produced a remarkable proof edition of the Franklin Half Dollar. This mid-century silver coin, containing 0.3617 troy ounces of 90 percent pure silver, stands as a testament to the era's precise minting capabilities. Certified in an extraordinary Proof 68 condition, this specimen showcases the design details with immense clarity and brilliance. The obverse of the coin features a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin, one of America's most famous founding figures. Surrounding his portrait are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1958 date. The initials of the designer, John R. Sinnock, are also subtly placed on this side. Turning to the reverse, the central theme is the iconic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings is depicted, satisfying the legal requirement for the denomination. The reverse inscriptions include the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the face value of the coin, designated as HALF DOLLAR. Because it was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin carries no mint mark, leaving the fields clean and focused entirely on the historic imagery.
