Introduced in 1959, this version of the United States one cent coin represents a fascinating era of American pocket change. Struck in a traditional alloy containing 95 percent copper alongside a 5 percent mixture of tin and zinc, these pieces carry a distinct metallic weight and warmth that would later be altered in the early 1980s. The obverse features the historic portrait of Abraham Lincoln, a depiction originally created by Victor David Brenner. Facing right, the President is accompanied by the familiar inscriptions of liberty and trust. On the reverse, the artistry of Frank Gasparro comes to life with a detailed rendering of the Lincoln Memorial, a design chosen to honor the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The reverse also bears the traditional national mottoes and the denomination.
