In 1960, the Denver Mint produced a silver half dollar that stands as a classic example of mid-century American coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver, this fifty-cent piece carries a total of 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. The coin represents a departure from traditional allegorical figures, choosing instead to honor one of America's most famous founding citizens. The front of the coin features a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin, rendered by designer John R. Sinnock. Accompanying this portrait are the inscriptions for liberty and the national trust, alongside the 1960 production year. The simplicity of the portrait highlights the statesman's recognizable features in a clean, modern style. On the reverse, the central focus is the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with open wings complements the design, fulfilling the legal requirement to depict the national bird. The reverse also displays the traditional Latin motto meaning "out of many, one," the name of the issuing nation, and the half dollar denomination.
