1961 Franklin Half Dollar BU

0.3575 troy oz .900 1961 Brilliant Unc

In 1961, the United States Mint produced a half dollar that departed from the traditional depictions of Liberty, opting instead to honor one of the nation's most famous founding fathers. The obverse of this silver coin presents a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin, designed by John R. Sinnock. Surrounding the statesman are the inscriptions of freedom and faith, with the word LIBERTY positioned above his likeness and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST resting below. The year 1961 is placed clearly to the right of his profile. Turning the coin over reveals a detailed depiction of the historic Liberty Bell as the central reverse motif. To the left of the bell, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, while a small eagle with open wings stands to the right. The denomination, HALF DOLLAR, is written along the bottom curve. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, these particular mid-century pieces contain 0.3575 troy ounces of silver and do not bear a mint mark, leaving the space clean and highlighting the classic American design elements in brilliant uncirculated condition.
