1962-D Franklin Half Dollar BU
In 1962, the Denver Mint produced a striking silver half dollar that captures a unique moment in mid-century American coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver (containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal), this coin is a brilliant uncirculated example of a design that broke with the tradition of depicting allegorical figures of Liberty, opting instead to honor a historical American icon. The obverse presents a clean, right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin, designed by John R. Sinnock. Accompanying the statesman's portrait are the classic inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST", alongside the 1962 date. This clean portraiture represents a distinct stylistic shift for United States currency during this era. On the reverse, the design showcases the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings is visible, fulfilling the legal requirement to depict the national symbol on the half dollar. The reverse inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", the denomination "HALF DOLLAR", and the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Collectors can locate the "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint positioned directly above the yoke of the bell.
