The 1963 Franklin half dollar stands as a striking example of mid twentieth century American coinage, struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint. This particular issue is a Gem Proof, a designation that highlights the exceptional sharpness and mirror-like quality achieved through specialized minting processes. Because it was produced in Philadelphia, the coin carries no mint mark, keeping the focus entirely on its clean, classic lines. On the obverse, a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin takes center stage. This depiction of one of America's most famous founding figures is surrounded by the simple yet powerful inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the date of 1963. The design was originally created by John R. Sinnock, who captured Franklin's likeness with remarkable dignity.
