Struck in 90 percent silver, this first-year issue represents a major transition point in United States coinage, as it was the final year that circulating half dollars were minted with this high of a precious metal content. The Philadelphia Mint produced over 273 million of these coins, which bear no mint mark. On the obverse, the portrait of John F.
