1964 Roosevelt Dime BU
Semi-Numismatic
1964 Roosevelt Dime BU
In 1964, the United States Mint produced a ten-cent piece that would mark the end of a long-standing numismatic tradition. This Roosevelt dime represents the final year that circulating dimes were struck in a 90 percent silver alloy, combined with 10 percent copper. Weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 17.9 millimeters in diameter, each of these pieces contains approximately 0.0723 troy ounces of pure silver, making them highly prized by those who appreciate the transition of American coinage metals. The obverse of the coin displays a left-facing portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a design created by John R. Sinnock that first entered circulation in 1946. Surrounding the profile are the familiar inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1964 date and the designer's initials, JS. On the reverse, the imagery shifts to symbols of peace, strength, and liberty. A central torch is flanked by an olive branch on the left and an oak branch on the right. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination ONE DIME frame the design, while the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is woven throughout the background. This particular specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the original luster and sharp details of a historic mid-century issue.
