The mid 1960s marked a significant transition in United States coinage, particularly for the half dollar. This 1966 issue, part of the beloved Kennedy Half Dollar series, represents the era of silver-clad composition. Struck with a purity of 40 percent silver, each of these coins contains 0.1479 troy ounces of precious metal, bridging the gap between the traditional 90 percent silver coins of the past and the base-metal clad compositions that followed. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of President John F. Kennedy, a design created by Gilroy Roberts. This powerful bust is accompanied by the poignant inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" split across the lower field. On the reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, a detailed heraldic eagle is depicted clutching a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both strength and peace. The eagle is surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR," along with the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Finding a 1966 specimen in such an extraordinary state of preservation is a rare treat for enthusiasts. Graded at Mint State 68, this coin exhibits an exceptional level of detail and luster.
