Launched with the goal of introducing the nation's gold to global markets, these pieces were minted without a designated face value. Instead, their worth was tied directly to the fluctuating market price of the precious metal they contained. This 1968 specimen represents only the second year of production for the series, originating from the South African Mint. It is a proof issue from an extremely limited run of just 5,000 pieces struck that year. The coin contains one troy ounce of gold, minted at a purity of 0.9167. The obverse displays the profile of Paul Kruger, who served as the first and only president of the country. Surrounding his likeness is the name of the issuing nation, rendered in both Afrikaans and English. The reverse showcases the springbok antelope, a swift and graceful creature recognized as the national animal of South Africa. Alongside this wildlife motif, the reverse inscriptions record the year of manufacture and the precise weight of the gold content.
