In 1968, the Kingdom of Tonga issued a remarkable commemorative coin struck in palladium, a metal rarely chosen for coinage at the time. This massive piece weighs 64 grams (approximately 2.0164 troy ounces) of 0.980 fine palladium. Issued in a brilliant uncirculated finish, this coin belongs to a very limited release, with only 400 pieces ever minted. The obverse features the right-facing portrait of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, framed by a border of small, delicate crowns. A special countermark on the coin displays the dates 1918 and 1968 flanking the initials TTIV, marking the golden jubilee of the monarch's birth alongside his coronation. The reverse displays the detailed national arms of Tonga, with the denomination of 1 Hau prominently placed at the top. One of the most fascinating aspects of this issue is found on its rim.
