The front of the coin features a profile portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, designed by Frank Gasparro. This side includes the traditional motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" alongside the "S" mint mark, indicating its origin from the San Francisco facility. On the reverse, Gasparro designed a powerful tribute to the space age, depicting an eagle landing on the lunar surface while holding an olive branch. This side also bears the Latin phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and identifies the issuing nation as the United States of America.
