1971-1976 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollar Proof

0.3161 troy oz .400 Proof

Struck in 40% silver at the San Francisco Mint, the Eisenhower Dollar represents a fascinating era in United States coinage. These proof-finish dollars, minted from 1971 to 1976, carry a substantial 0.3161 troy ounces of pure silver. The coin honors Dwight David Eisenhower, the renowned General and 34th President of the United States, whose left-facing profile dominates the obverse. Above his portrait, the word LIBERTY is inscribed, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the date of issue flank the base of the design. Depending on the year of issue, the reverse of this dollar features one of two distinct designs. The standard version, minted from 1971 to 1974, showcases the historic Apollo XI insignia. This design depicts an eagle descending toward the surface of the moon, clutching an olive branch in its talons, with the planet Earth visible in the background showing North America. Thirteen stars encircle the celestial scene. For the 1976 Bicentennial issue, the reverse design shifts to a depiction of the Liberty Bell positioned in front of the moon, symbolizing two centuries of American history. Both reverse variations include the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the face value of ONE DOLLAR.
