In 1971, the United States introduced a dollar coin that captured both a celebrated national leader and one of humanity's greatest achievements. Struck at the San Francisco Mint with a forty percent silver composition, this proof coin contains 0.3161 troy ounces of pure silver. Its highly polished surfaces highlight a detailed design that bridges mid-century American leadership with the dawn of space exploration. The front of the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Dwight David Eisenhower, who served as both a five-star general and the thirty-fourth president of the United States. Surrounding his profile are the traditional inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the year 1971 positioned at the bottom. The "S" mint mark is placed just below the neck of the president. On the reverse, the coin features a design adapted from the official Apollo XI mission insignia. An eagle carrying an olive branch descends toward the surface of the moon, while a distant Earth showing the North American continent hangs in the background.
