The obverse features a strong profile bust of the former president and general, accompanied by the traditional inscriptions of liberty and trust. This side of the coin was designed by Frank Gasparro, whose artistry captures the solemn dignity of the leader. The standard reverse design celebrates a monumental human achievement, depicting an eagle landing on the surface of the moon while clutching an olive branch in its talons. This imagery connects the nation's currency directly to the space age. For the special 1976 bicentennial issue, the reverse design was temporarily changed to showcase the Liberty Bell positioned in front of the moon. These proof coins are composed of a copper-nickel clad outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper, specifically 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel on the exterior.
