1974 South Africa 1 oz Gold Krugerrand BU
Introduced in 1967, the South African Krugerrand holds a special place in numismatic history as the pioneer of mass-produced gold bullion coinage. Struck by the South African Mint, this specimen from 1974 contains one troy ounce of gold. Because of the nation's apartheid policies, the United States banned the importation of these coins in 1985, a restriction that remained in place until it was lifted in 1994. The obverse side features the profile of Paul Kruger, who served as the first and only president of South Africa. Surrounding his portrait are inscriptions of the country's name written in both English and Afrikaans, rendered as SOUTH AFRICA and SUID-AFRIKA. On the reverse, the design showcases a springbok antelope, the recognized national animal of South Africa. The reverse also displays the 1974 minting year alongside details of the gold weight, inscribed with FYNGOUD and FINE GOLD.
