1977 South Africa 1 oz Gold Krugerrand BU

1.0000 troy oz .9167 1977 Brilliant Unc

Introduced in 1967, the South African Krugerrand holds a special place in numismatic history as the first modern gold bullion coin. Unlike traditional coinage, this series was created to derive its value directly from the fluctuating price of gold, offering a unique way to appreciate the precious metal. The South African Mint struck these pieces using a durable alloy composed of 0.9167 fine gold combined with copper, giving the coin its distinctive warm tone. The obverse of the 1977 edition features the profile of Paul Kruger, surrounded by the dual-language inscription of the issuing nation, SOUTH AFRICA and SUID-AFRIKA. On the reverse, a springbok antelope bounds across the landscape, flanked by the split year of minting, 1977. The reverse inscriptions also detail the weight and purity in both Afrikaans and English, reading FYNGOUD, 1 OZ, FINE GOLD, and KRUGERRAND.
