1979 South Africa 1 oz Gold Krugerrand BU

1.0000 troy oz .9167 1979 Brilliant Unc

Introduced in 1967 by the South African Mint, this iconic issue represents the very first gold bullion coin designed for mass production. By 1979, the series was firmly established as a global standard, though its journey through international commerce would later face major shifts, including an import ban by the United States in 1985 that was eventually rescinded in 1994. The obverse features a detailed portrait of Paul Kruger, the inaugural president of South Africa. Surrounding his likeness, the name of the issuing nation is written in two languages, appearing as SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. On the reverse, a springbok antelope bounds across the landscape. This side also displays the 1979 minting year, split across the design, alongside inscriptions detailing the weight of the precious metal, which contains exactly one ounce of fine gold.
