The 1980-S Kennedy half dollar represents a striking example of modern American coinage, minted at the San Francisco facility. As a proof issue, this coin was prepared using specially polished dies and blanks, resulting in a mirror-like finish that highlights the intricate details of its dual-artist design. The front of the coin displays a portrait of President John F. Kennedy, captured in profile. This obverse side, created by Gilroy Roberts, also features the traditional national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," split across the lower field just above the 1980 date. On the reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, the coin displays a detailed heraldic eagle. The eagle holds a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both strength and peace. The outer rim is inscribed with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination, "HALF DOLLAR." This fifty-cent piece is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper.
