1981 South Africa 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand BU
Introduced as part of the second year of production for fractional sizes, this 1981 gold coin offers an intriguing look at South Africa's most famous bullion series. While the original one-ounce coin debuted in the late 1960s, these smaller fractions expanded the series to new audiences in the early 1980s. This quarter-ounce edition contains 0.2500 troy ounces of gold, struck in a durable alloy with a purity of 0.9167. The obverse displays the profile of Paul Kruger, the prominent nineteenth-century president of the South African Republic. His portrait is accompanied by the name of the issuing nation written in both Afrikaans and English, reflecting the country's dual linguistic heritage. On the reverse, a springbok antelope is depicted mid-stride across the African landscape. The year of minting, 1981, is split across the field, framing the animal. The inscriptions on this side also detail the metal weight in both Afrikaans and English, reading "FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD" to denote its precious metal content. Struck by the South African Mint, this piece remains a classic example of twentieth-century coinage design.
