In late 1982, a remarkable anomaly emerged in American pocket change. The Philadelphia Mint, which had begun placing a 'P' mint mark on Roosevelt dimes in 1980, accidentally released a run of these ten-cent pieces completely lacking the mint mark. This omission created a legendary modern rarity, first noticed by the public in December of that year. While the total mintage for the 1982 Roosevelt dime exceeded 519 million, only a small fraction of that number escaped the minting facility with this specific error. This issue holds a unique place in American numismatic history as the sole business strike coin from the United States to ever be produced and distributed without its planned mint mark. This particular copper-nickel clad coin survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, showcasing the classic design elements in crisp detail. The obverse features the profile of Franklin D. Roosevelt accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the date 1982. The reverse displays the traditional torch flanked by olive and oak branches, surrounded by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DIME.
