While fifty-cent pieces are generally familiar to the public, this specific issue from the Philadelphia Mint is notably difficult to locate. Its scarcity stems from a decision by the United States Mint to skip the production of official Mint Sets for the year 1982, meaning these coins could not be easily saved in pristine condition by collectors at the time of release. On the obverse, the coin features a left-facing portrait of President John F. Kennedy, a design created by Gilroy Roberts. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date "1982" frame this classic profile. The reverse, sculpted by Frank Gasparro, displays a heraldic eagle clutching both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, surrounded by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR." Struck in Philadelphia, as indicated by the "P" mint mark located just above the date, this piece is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper.
