1983-P Kennedy Half Dollar BU
The 1983 Kennedy half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint represents an intriguing chapter for observers of modern United States coinage. Unlike many other years of this long-running series, the United States Mint did not issue official uncirculated mint sets in 1983. Because of this omission, finding examples in Brilliant Uncirculated condition is surprisingly difficult, making this specific issue a sought-after piece for those studying the era. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of President John F. Kennedy dominates the design, created by Gilroy Roberts. The inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST", is positioned below the bust, while the "P" mint mark of the Philadelphia facility is visible just above the date. The reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, displays a powerful heraldic eagle. The eagle clutches both a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace, beneath a banner bearing the Latin phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM". This fifty-cent piece is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper. Though it contains no precious metal, its scarcity in high-grade preservation makes it a compelling subject of study, showcasing how production decisions can dramatically affect the availability of a coin decades later.
