1983-S Kennedy Half Dollar Gem Proof
The 1983-S Kennedy half dollar represents a striking example of modern American coinage, produced at the San Francisco Mint. This particular issue is a proof strike, a method of manufacture that uses specially prepared dies and polished planchets to create a mirror-like finish with sharp, frosted details. On the obverse, the coin displays a left-facing portrait of President John F. Kennedy, designed by Gilroy Roberts. This side features the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" split across the lower field, with the mint mark "S" positioned just above the date of 1983. The reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, features the heraldic eagle. The eagle holds a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both strength and peace. The inscriptions on this side include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination, "HALF DOLLAR". While the coin has a warm copper core, its outer layers are composed of a copper and nickel blend bonded to that inner center, giving it a bright, silver-colored appearance despite containing no precious metal.
