1984 Canada 1/2 oz Proof Gold $100 Jacques Cartier

0.5000 troy oz .9167 1984 Proof

In 1984, Canada released a striking gold coin to mark the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's historic arrival at Gaspé Bay, Quebec, in 1534. This commemorative issue, backed by the Canadian government, contains exactly one half ounce of gold and is struck in a brilliant proof finish. The reverse of the coin, created by artist Carola Tietz, displays a detailed portrait of the explorer Jacques Cartier alongside a sailing vessel. This side of the coin features his name, the dual dates of 1534 and 1984, and the face value of 100 dollars. On the obverse, a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Arnold Machin, is accompanied by the Latin inscription denoting her royal title. This release had a total mintage of 67,662 pieces, serving as a beautiful numismatic tribute to a pivotal moment in Canadian history.
