Rather than precious silver, this issue is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper, a durable composition that became standard for circulating half dollars in the early 1970s. On the obverse, the coin displays a left-facing portrait of President John F. Kennedy, originally designed by Gilroy Roberts.
