In 1986, the United States Mint launched a historic bullion program, introducing a one-dollar silver coin that would become a cornerstone of modern coinage. This inaugural issue contains one troy ounce of 99.9 percent pure silver. Certified in Mint State 69 condition, this specimen represents the very first year of the celebrated series, which ran in this original design format from 1986 to 2021. The front of the coin showcases a classic design by Adolph A. Weinman, originally created for the Walking Liberty half dollar. It features Lady Liberty moving gracefully across the landscape, draped in the American flag, with the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the debut year of "1986" clearly visible. On the reverse, John Mercanti designed a powerful heraldic eagle that draws inspiration from the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle holds an olive branch and arrows, beneath a canopy of thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The surrounding inscriptions confirm the nation of origin and the weight of the precious metal, reading "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" alongside "1 OZ. FINE SILVER" and "ONE DOLLAR."
