1986-W 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle PR-69 DCAM PCGS (Diehl Signed)
The year 1986 marked the debut of a legendary American coinage tradition. Minted at the West Point Mint, this fifty dollar gold piece contains a full troy ounce of gold. This particular specimen is certified in Proof 69 Deep Cameo condition, showcasing the sharp contrast and mirror-like finishes characteristic of the finest proof mintings. Adding to its distinct appeal, the presentation is hand-signed by Philip N. Diehl, a notable figure in modern coining history. On the obverse, the design revives the iconic figure of Lady Liberty originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the early twentieth-century double eagle. Liberty strides forward with rays of light radiating behind her, accompanied by the Roman numeral date MCMLXXXVI. The West Point origin is proudly displayed on the coin's surface with the 'W' mint mark. The reverse side features a detailed design by Miley Busiek, depicting a family of bald eagles. This scene shows a male eagle in flight returning to a nest that holds a female eagle and their young. Out of a total worldwide mintage of 446,290 pieces, this beautifully preserved coin remains a stellar example of the inaugural year of the American Eagle series.
