1987 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle BU (MCMLXXXVII)

0.5000 troy oz .9167 1987 Brilliant Unc

Introduced in 1986, the Gold American Eagle series quickly became a cornerstone of United States coinage. This 1987 release contains exactly one half ounce of pure gold content, presented in brilliant uncirculated condition. A defining feature of this early issue is the date, which is inscribed in traditional Roman numerals as MCMLXXXVII rather than standard Arabic numbers. The obverse of the coin showcases a celebrated design originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It features Lady Liberty walking forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, set against a backdrop of rising sunbeams. This historic imagery is paired with a reverse design by Miley Busiek, which illustrates a male bald eagle carrying an olive branch back to a nest containing a female eagle and their young. With its face value of 25 Dollars, this coin is fully backed by the United States government. The reverse also displays the traditional national mottoes, In God We Trust and E Pluribus Unum, alongside the weight and gold purity inscriptions.
