Introduced in the late twentieth century, the American Silver Eagle series represents a major milestone in modern United States Mint history. This 1987 issue marks only the second year of production for the nation's premier silver bullion program. Each coin is backed by the United States government for its weight and purity, containing exactly one troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver with a face value of one dollar. The obverse features the iconic walking figure of Lady Liberty, originally designed by Adolph A. Weinman. She moves gracefully across the coin, draped in the American flag with her right arm extended toward the dawn of a new day. Legible inscriptions on this face include the word LIBERTY spaced across the top, the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date of 1987. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle stands behind a shield, clutching an olive branch in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other. Above the eagle, a cluster of thirteen small stars represents the original colonies. The reverse inscriptions confirm the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, alongside the weight and denomination, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER ONE DOLLAR. This particular coin has been professionally certified in Mint State 69, representing an exceptionally well-preserved specimen from the second year of this enduring series.
