In 1988, a special gold coin emerged to mark a bridge between two cultures. This proof issue, containing one troy ounce of 99.9 percent pure gold, was struck to honor the China Mint Company attending the International Investors Conference held in New Orleans. With a highly restricted mintage of only 1,500 pieces, the coin stands as a scarce and beautiful artifact of late twentieth-century diplomacy and craftsmanship, backed by the authority of the People's Bank of China. One side of the coin departs from the traditional Temple of Heaven imagery to showcase a detailed nautical scene. A Chinese ship and a riverboat glide across the water, accompanied by an inscription celebrating Sino-American Friendship. The other side features a heartwarming wildlife portrait, depicting an adult panda alongside its cub amidst a stand of bamboo. The coin also displays its purity and weight specifications, marked as 1 oz Au and 999 gold.
