Introduced in 1987, the Great Britain Britannia series has become a cornerstone of modern coinage. This 1990 edition contains a half ounce of highly pure 0.9999 fine gold. Backed fully by the British government as official sovereign currency, the coin carries a face value of 100 pounds. The design of this piece celebrates a legendary national symbol. On the reverse, the powerful figure of Britannia stands firm against a strong gale, a representation of resilience and integrity that has appeared on British coins since the era of the Roman Empire. This side also displays the year of issue, the denomination, and the purity of the gold. The obverse presents the classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II along with the 100 pounds denomination. The Royal Mint introduced a silver counterpart in 1997, initially as a proof coin, followed by a bullion version in 1998. The silver composition transitioned from 0.958 fineness, used from 1998 to 2012, to 0.999 pure silver starting in 2013.
