1990 South Africa 1 oz Gold Krugerrand BU
Introduced as a flagship bullion piece, the South African Krugerrand carries deep cultural imagery on its polished surfaces. The front of this 1990 issue displays the profile of Paul Kruger, who served as the sole president of the historic South African Republic. Surrounding his portrait, the nation's name is rendered in two of its official languages, appearing as both "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA." On the other side, a springbok antelope bounds across the landscape. This graceful animal is the recognized national symbol of South Africa. Alongside the wildlife motif, the reverse displays the 1990 production year and specifies the precious metal content, confirming the presence of one troy ounce of fine gold. While these gold pieces saw massive production numbers from the middle of the 1970s through the middle of the 1980s, the late 1980s marked a dramatic shift. Output plummeted after 1985, making this 1990 edition a much scarcer representative of this famous series than its predecessors from the peak production years.
