In 1993, the Casa de Moneda de México struck a limited run of 73,881 of these one-ounce gold pieces. Minted with a purity of 0.999 fine gold, this issue from the Libertad series is backed by the Banco de México, representing a brilliant example of North American minting craftsmanship from the late twentieth century. The obverse of the coin displays the Mexican National Shield, surrounded by the inscription "Estados Unidos Mexicanos." This central emblem is balanced on the reverse by the figure of Winged Victory, who stands before the legendary Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The reverse also bears the year 1993, the "Mo" mint mark for Mexico City, and details confirming the weight and purity of the precious metal.
