This scarcity is a direct result of significantly reduced mintage numbers during those two decades, making this particular 1994 issue a fascinating find for those studying twentieth-century coinage. Struck by the South African Mint in a composition of 0.9167 fine gold, the coin contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold. The obverse displays the profile of Paul Kruger, who served as the first and only president of the South African Republic. Surrounding his portrait, the name of the issuing nation is inscribed in both Afrikaans and English, reading "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA". On the reverse, a springbok antelope, the recognized national animal of South Africa, is depicted in mid-stride across the grassy veld. The reverse design also incorporates the split minting year of 1994 positioned on either side of the antelope, alongside inscriptions detailing the weight and purity of the gold content, marked in both Afrikaans and English as "FYNGOUD" and "FINE GOLD" surrounding the "1 OZ" designation.
