1997 Australia 1 oz Proof Palladium Emu

In 1997, Australia released a remarkable legal tender coin struck in one troy ounce of highly pure 0.9995 palladium. Part of a short-lived series produced only from 1995 to 1998, this issue carries a face value of 40 dollars and is backed by the Australian government. The series came to an abrupt halt in 1998 when rising palladium prices forced a suspension of the program, making these coins an intriguing chapter in modern minting history. While the official annual limits allowed for up to 2,500 proof coins to be struck, the actual production was often much lower. For the 1997 release, only 769 of these proof coins were minted, making it an exceptionally scarce find for those exploring world coinage. The reverse of the coin features a detailed depiction of an emu watching over her eggs, a native Australian scene envisioned by designer Louise Pinder. On the obverse, the right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is displayed alongside the 1997 date and the 40 Dollars denomination.
