In 1999, the United States Mint embarked on a historic numismatic journey, celebrating each state in the order of their entry into the Union. This Denver Mint issue represents the second release in the landmark 50 State Quarters Program, honoring the state of Pennsylvania. Struck in a brilliant uncirculated finish, the coin features a composition of copper and nickel bonded to a core of pure copper. The obverse displays the familiar profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR, along with the D mint mark indicating its origin in Denver. On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, the coin showcases a rich combination of Pennsylvania's heritage. The design features an outline of the state itself, with the iconic Keystone symbol positioned in the upper right. Standing prominently is the Commonwealth statue, a figure that has crowned the state capitol dome in Harrisburg since 1905. The state's guiding principles, VIRTUE, LIBERTY, INDEPENDENCE, are inscribed alongside the state name and the year of release, 1999, which sits above the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
