In early 1999, the United States Mint embarked on a historic numismatic journey, releasing the first coin in its highly anticipated Statehood program. This initial issue honors Delaware, the nation's first state. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this quarter features a brilliant uncirculated finish that highlights the intricate details of its dual-sided design. The reverse of the coin captures a pivotal moment from the American Revolution, depicting Caesar Rodney on his urgent 1776 horseback ride. This dynamic scene is accompanied by the inscriptions "DELAWARE", "1787", "THE FIRST STATE", and the year of release, "1999". On the obverse, a familiar profile of George Washington graces the coin, originally designed by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins for this special series. Surrounding the portrait are the traditional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "IN GOD WE TRUST", "LIBERTY", and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR".
