This commemorative silver dollar, minted in 1999, marks the 150th anniversary of the passing of Dolley Madison. Renowned for her sixteen years of service as the official hostess of the White House, she is perhaps best remembered for her bravery during the War of 1812. When British forces set fire to the presidential mansion in 1814, she famously saved the historic portrait of George Washington painted by Gilbert Stuart. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of the former first lady set against the backdrop of her estate, Montpelier, accompanied by delicate cape jasmine flowers. The inscriptions read DOLLEY MADISON, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the year 1999. On the reverse, the design showcases the Montpelier mansion itself, surrounded by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, MONTPELIER, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the face value of ONE DOLLAR. Struck from 0.900 fine silver, this coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. Authorized and backed by the United States Mint, this issue had a total mintage of 224,403 pieces, serving as a lasting tribute to one of the most influential figures in early American history.
