1999-P Pennsylvania State Quarter BU
In 1999, the United States Mint embarked on a celebrated journey to honor each of the fifty states, starting with the pioneering designs of the State Quarter series. Among the very first to be released was this twenty-five cent piece from the Philadelphia Mint, struck in a brilliant uncirculated finish. This coin features a copper-nickel clad composition bonded to a core of pure copper, presenting a bright, clean luster that highlights its intricate details. The obverse displays the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president are the inscriptions for the country, the denomination, and the classic national mottos of trust and liberty, alongside the distinct 'P' mint mark indicating its origin in Philadelphia. On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, the coin celebrates the rich heritage of Pennsylvania. The design showcases the elegant Commonwealth statue set against an outline of the state itself. Accompanying the statue is a keystone, representing Pennsylvania's historic nickname, along with the state's guiding values of virtue, liberty, and independence. The year of release, 1999, and the traditional motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' are anchored at the bottom, completing a design that honors one of the nation's original founding states.
