In 1999, a special silver quarter honored Delaware, the very first state to join the Union. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. The coin is struck in a proof format, giving its details an exceptionally sharp and polished appearance. The obverse displays the classic profile of George Washington, a design originally created by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions denoting the nation's name, the denomination, the national motto, and the word Liberty. The small 'S' mint mark is also visible, indicating its origin in San Francisco. On the reverse, the coin depicts Caesar Rodney on his historic 1776 horseback ride. This side also features the state's name, the year 1787 to commemorate its entry into the Union, the phrase 'The First State', and the traditional national motto 'E Pluribus Unum' alongside the 1999 release year.
