1999-S Delaware State Quarter Gem Proof
In 1999, the United States Mint embarked on a celebrated journey to honor each of the fifty states, starting with Delaware. This particular quarter, struck at the San Francisco Mint with a brilliant proof finish, showcases a composition of copper and nickel bonded to a core of pure copper. The pristine surfaces of this Gem Proof specimen highlight the sharp details of a design that commemorates a pivotal moment in early American history. The reverse of the coin features Caesar Rodney on his historic 1776 horseback ride, a journey undertaken to cast a crucial vote for independence. Accompanying this dynamic equestrian scene are the inscriptions "DELAWARE," "1787," "THE FIRST STATE," and the name "CAESAR RODNEY." The traditional national motto, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the year of issue, "1999," are also prominently displayed on this side, which was designed by William Cousins. On the obverse, the classic profile of George Washington faces left, a design originally created by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president's portrait are the familiar inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR." The small "S" mint mark is clearly visible, denoting its origin from the San Francisco facility where it was crafted specifically for collectors.
