1999-S Georgia State Quarter Gem Proof (Silver)
In 1999, the United States Mint embarked on a historic journey to honor each state, starting with the first five designs of the 50 State Quarters Program. Representing the fourth release in this landmark series, the Georgia quarter stands out as a beautiful celebration of southern identity. Struck at the San Francisco Mint with an 'S' mint mark, this specific edition is crafted from 0.900 fine silver, containing 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse of the coin displays the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the president are the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, alongside the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR. On the reverse side, designer T. James Ferrell captures the essence of the Peach State. A prominent outline of Georgia forms the backdrop for a ripe peach, flanked by sprigs of live oak, the state tree. Banners unfurl with the state's guiding principles: WISDOM, JUSTICE, MODERATION. The reverse also displays the state's admission year of 1788, the coin's release year of 1999, and the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, all rendered in the sharp, reflective contrast of a gem proof finish.
