1999-S Pennsylvania State Quarter Gem Proof (Silver)

In 1999, the United States Mint embarked on a historic numismatic journey, celebrating each of the fifty states in the order of their entry into the Union. The second release in this landmark series honors Pennsylvania, rendered here in a brilliant proof finish struck from 90 percent silver. This particular edition contains 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal and bears the 'S' mint mark, indicating its production at the San Francisco Mint. The obverse of the coin displays the familiar profile of George Washington, originally modeled by John Flanagan and updated by William Cousins. Surrounding the first president are the inscriptions 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', 'LIBERTY', 'IN GOD WE TRUST', and 'QUARTER DOLLAR'. On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, Pennsylvania's rich heritage is brought to life. The design features the elegant Commonwealth statue positioned over an outline of the state. To the left, a keystone represents the state's famous nickname, while the state motto, 'VIRTUE, LIBERTY, INDEPENDENCE', is inscribed alongside.
