Minted from 0.9167 fine gold, this coin contains exactly one-quarter troy ounce of precious metal. Its mirror-like proof finish highlights a classic design that has defined South African coinage for decades. On the obverse, the coin displays a detailed portrait of Paul Kruger, who served as the first and only president of the South African Republic. Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions of the nation's name rendered in two of its official languages, Afrikaans and English, reading "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA". The reverse features the graceful springbok antelope, a native species and the national animal of South Africa. This particular wildlife illustration was crafted by the artist Coert Steynberg and originally appeared on the nation's five shilling coin before being adapted for the Krugerrand series.
