In 1999, the West Point Mint produced a distinctive ten-ounce gold coin that stands out for its production method. Unlike typical proof coins, this five-dollar piece was struck using unpolished dies. This specific technique gave the metal a non-proof finish, creating a unique texture and appearance for this issue. Certified in nearly perfect Mint State 69 condition, the coin contains exactly one-tenth of an ounce of pure gold content. The obverse side displays a classic American image adapted from the famous Gold Double Eagle designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It depicts Lady Liberty standing proudly before the Capitol building, holding a glowing torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The design represents strength and peace, rendered in rich detail on the small gold surface. On the reverse, the artistry of Miley Busiek comes to life. The scene depicts a family of bald eagles, with a male eagle in mid-flight carrying an olive branch back to a nest that holds a female and their young. This side also features the traditional national mottos, including "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Marked with a "W" to indicate its West Point origin, this coin remains an intriguing mystery for researchers, as the United States Mint has never released official production numbers for this specific variety.
