Struck at the West Point Mint in New York, this fifty-dollar coin contains one troy ounce of gold with a purity of 0.9167. As a proof strike, it displays a high level of detail and contrast, showcasing the artistry of its designs. On the obverse, the coin presents a celebrated depiction of Lady Liberty, an adaptation of the famous early twentieth-century design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Liberty is shown in stride, holding a lit torch in one hand to represent enlightenment and an olive branch in the other as a symbol of peace. The year 1999 is inscribed alongside this classic figure. Turning to the reverse, the coin features a detailed scene created by illustrator Miley Busiek.
