The United States gold quarter eagle, minted from 1908 to 1929, represents one of the most visually striking departures in American coinage. Issued by the U.S. Mint, this two and a half dollar denomination features an innovative incuse design, meaning the details are sunken into the coin's surface rather than raised above it. This flat, recessed relief gives the coin a completely flat profile and a distinct tactile feel. On the obverse, the design showcases a representation of Liberty wearing a traditional Native American war bonnet. This figure is encircled by thirteen stars, with the word "LIBERTY" inscribed along the top edge and the year of issue positioned below. The design was created by the artist Bela Lyon Pratt, bringing a fresh, naturalistic aesthetic to the nation's gold currency. The reverse of the coin is dedicated to a proud bald eagle standing amidst classic national mottos. The bird is surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination. Tucked into the field are the traditional phrases "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Depending on where the coin was struck, it may feature a "D" mint mark for the Denver Mint, or no mint mark at all, indicating it was produced at the Philadelphia Mint. Each coin is struck from 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of precious metal.
