The United States Mint broke traditional boundaries when it issued the gold quarter eagle from 1908 to 1929. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this 2.50 dollar denomination features an incuse design, meaning the details are recessed below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This unusual sunken relief gives the piece a distinct tactile quality and a striking visual depth. On the obverse, a portrait of Liberty wearing a traditional feathered headdress is surrounded by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. The word Liberty and the year of issue are clearly inscribed alongside the portrait. The reverse of the coin features a proud bald eagle standing among the classic inscriptions United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and In God We Trust, alongside the designated face value. Struck in 90 percent pure gold, each coin contains 0.12094 troy ounces of precious metal. These historic pieces were produced at the Philadelphia or Denver mints.
