The United States gold quarter eagle, minted between 1908 and 1929, represents a radical departure from traditional coin design. Rather than the raised relief typical of most coinage, this piece features an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin. This unusual technique gives the coin a distinctively modern, tactile quality that sets it apart in American numismatic history. On the obverse, the design presents a profile of Liberty wearing a traditional feathered headdress. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the year of issue. The reverse features a proud bald eagle standing amidst the classic inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the denomination of 2.50 dollars displayed at the bottom. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, these coins were produced at the Philadelphia and Denver facilities of the United States Mint. Each coin is struck in 90 percent gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of precious metal. This particular specimen is certified in Mint State 63 (MS-63) condition, preserving the crisp, recessed details of this innovative artistic experiment.
